This richly layered multimedia book app takes readers behind the scenes to see all the different aspects that go into creating animated feature films. It's fascinating peeling back the layers of classically animated and computer generated (CG) films and watching how a scene develops from the initial story sketch, to rough drawings or computer models, to final colored animation.

Epic!-Books for Kids offers a handy and extensive library for children ages 2 to 12 for a low monthly subscription fee. Thousands of high quality children’s books from classics to award-winning favorites are available. $9.99/month, but could do a 1 month free trial.

From book behemoth Barnes & Noble, Tikatok StorySpark is aimed at your family’s pint-sized publisher. Kids write and illustrate their own books, using a catalog of art or their own photos or digital drawings for the backgrounds. When it’s ready, books are “published” under a chosen pen name and posted online at Tikatok.com. iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android; app is free, books are $3 each.

InferCabulary offers an interesting alternative to traditional flashcard practice for learning middle school vocabulary.

This app will allow students to read the ebooks from Horizon library on their devices at home.  Students can download the app.  It will ask them for a username and password.  They should use their school network login.  Then it will ask for the Follet shelf URL.  Enter the following:  wbb02004.follettshelf.com.  Horizon has both ebooks and audiobooks available in their digital collection.

Language Empire is a comprehensive language and communication program suitable for students in elementary grades and some in middle school. It will also be useful for remedial students in high school. The application addresses how, which and why questions, predictions, figurative language, sequencing, vocabulary and making inferences. Players see visual and written scenarios followed by a question in the target area and several possible answers. Narration can be turned on or off to focus students on auditory or reading comprehension.

War Horse is a unique book app. The story is read by the author Micahel Morpurgo in a live theater presentation to a group of children. Morpurgo is a natural storyteller and it works in this setting. As he reads the story you can follow the text as it is highlighted. The ancillary materials include 34 interviews by experts. It also includes over 20 objects in 3D as well as music, images, and timeline.

Tip: Classroom history and English teachers (grades 6-12) will be fascinated by the way this app integrates many disciplines, helping students develop a deeper understanding of the historical context of this novel.

Brian Cox's Wonders of Life takes you around the world on a journey about life.  It has 3D effects that you can move throughout the world and select information on a variety of topics from the monarch butterfly to the vision in the eye and so much more.  Move over David Attenborough there is a new naturalist in town and his name is Brian Cox.  He will appeal to young students and he presents the information in a way that makes you just sit and watch.  You become mesmerized.

This app will allow students to access the many ebooks available from the Pewaukee Public Library.  Down the app from the Pewaukee Library website, select an ebook, punch in your library card number and you are good to go.  If you have any trouble, the librarians will be happy to help you.
